4-H Youth Development

Participation in 4-H programs often forms the foundation of personal growth, happiness and success. 4-H programs provide a variety of opportunities to learn, lead and serve, and they provide the setting for fun, lasting friendships and memorable adventures. In Blount County, programs focus on leadership, citizenship, personal development, environmental stewarship, and workforce preparation.
Sigma Lambda Chi 4-H
Sigma Lambda Chi stands for service, leadership, and citizenship. Every 9th-12th grader in Blount County is eligible for this program. Activities include resume writing, public speaking, team building, camps, and much more! Sigma Lamba Chi is open to all Blount County students in the County Wide Club. It also meets during school at Alcoa, Heritage, William Blount and the Blount Home Education Association.
4-H Clubs
Any 4th-12th grade student in Blount County can join 4-H. Students choose their own project based on their personal interests from 57 projects ranging from Arts and Crafts to Wildlife. They can meet in the County Wide Club or at their school where 4-H is available.
State Wide 4-H Opportunities
Academic Conference
Conference provides junior high 4-H''ers the opportunity to receive intensive training in their project area and explore related career opportunities under the supervision of university scientists.
All Stars
The All Star program encourages service to others through both individual and cooperative efforts. All Stars are required to make a personal application of the All Star motto, "Service," in their clubs and communities. Looks great on resumes and applications.
Camps
Camps take place throughout the year. The four 4-H centers located throughout the state offer a very extensive summer camping program for young people in fourth- through 12-grades. There are also special camps held at different times of the year for various school groups.
Honor Club
Honor Club is organized statewide and provides recognition of 6th - 12th grade 4-H Club members who have demonstrated consistent leadership ability and have been active members in their clubs and communities.
National 4-H Congress
Congress is described as the "flagship" event of the national 4-H program. It is a leadership forum providing 4-H''ers with cross-cultural experiences in community service.
Roundup
Roundup is a yearly event that recognizes the outstanding project work and leadership accomplishments of senior 4-H members and All-Stars throughout the state.
Skill-A-Thon
The Skill-A-Thon program tests the extent of a 4-H exhibitor''s knowledge of livestock, their ability to communicate that knowledge and their decision-making and problem-solving skills.
State 4-H Council
State Council consists of 4-H leaders who were elected by their peers to serve on a youth advisory council that plans and facilitates 4-H programs statewide.
Tennessee 4-H Congress
State Congress is an experiental activity that allows 4-H members to learn how their state government functions and to develop a greater appreciation of the history and heritage of Tennessee. Held in the state capitol, Congress helps 4-H''ers develop a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities as citizens. All 9th and 10th grade are eligible to compete for this all expense paid trip based on an essay.
Vol State
Vol State gives the highest level of recognition to 4-H members and others who have outstanding records in project achievement, leadership and service.
Wildlife Project
Tennessee youth are taught wildlife ecology and management through various programs
Volunteers
Volunteers are the heart of the Blount County 4-H program. Screened volunteers plan and deliver several programs in their area of expertise. Volunteers receive training and support and every effort is made to match a volunteer to a program in their interest area. Contact the 4-H office for more details on application and training.
